I’m in my first tournament. I’m nervous already because I’ve never played against anybody else other than my brother and a couple close friends. My Luke Cage is doing work: stopping stuns with his Impervious Skin ability left and right, and at level two being able to handle the canon fodder that my opponent throws in their front row. I’ve put 4 stuns on his main character, Ghost Rider, before he could even think about scratching a man that can take a bullet and laugh at the effort. I’m nervous, but feeling very optimistic because I have three face up Fortress locations to stop even more wounds. Nothing can stop me right now, I think to myself. We’re pretty late into the game and its’ looking like things are going to start wrapping up. My opponent looks defeated then his eyes light up at the two cards he draws. He throws down an Adam Warlock and a Cosmo. He turns his Might location over as fast as he could as he wasn’t hiding his excitement. Cosmo began Nullifying Luke Cage and Adam Warlock started to put a hurting on, turn after turn. Even when I got the resources to call out Iron Fist and try to Iron Fist Punch Warlock, but to no avail. He uses Shock to the System to put my attack below the striking point. I’m at a loss and don’t seem to be drawing the cards I need anymore. The game ends 5 turns later. I lost.
There are a lot of cards in the game that I think should be in certain decks. Depending on what class or what main character you are using or even the strategy you’re trying to play towards. I don’t think anybody can argue there are certain cards that should be in almost every single deck. There are certain cards that when you see them come out onto the playing field, you cringe and have to adjust your game plan to try playing around them or try to take them out as fast as you can. It was a lot easier to pick out which cards were a staple for your decks when there was only the first core set. But now that there are two solid expansions with double the amount of content from when it was first released, you can tell the excitement is starting to build around certain cards more than others.
What is the best card in the game to you? Is it a Main Character that when you see it you can’t stand playing against? Is it a plot twist that swings the game in favor of someone else almost every time it’s played? Or is it a character that when they appear you think the game is over? The best card in the game to me is more than that. It’s a card that’s consistent. It’s a card that when you get it in the game it benefits you for the better each and every game. Every card is good in it’s own right and I credit the designers and developers in making a fun and exciting game. With each expansion that comes out, there come more cards that people think should be in every deck and eventually creating a large enough pool of great cards that there might not even be one single greatest card.
What do I think the best card in the game is? I think there are a lot of really great cards that should be considered in most decks. But Cosmo is among the top of that list. A telepathic space dog with a cool helmet. When he enters play he immediately alters the game. With his Nullify keyword, he’s going to take the abilities and powers of one of your opponent’s characters and just say bye-bye to them(a huge advantage to Cosmo’s owner.) I’m not saying he’s perfect at all and there are plenty of ways to counter him. But that’s exactly what you’d be doing to your deck, putting in a specific card just to counter Cosmo. If you see a Yondu in someone’s deck, ask him or her why they put him in their deck, most likely they will say Cosmo. Ever since the Defenders and A-Force expansions have been released, there are even more ways to counter him. First card that comes to mind, and possibly the most devastating, is Singularity. The ruling of when a character is removed from the board with Singularity and then brought back, Cosmo is no longer nullifying that character. That then makes your Cosmo useless until you either bring him out of the game and then back or have to drop a new Cosmo. Does that make Singularity the best card in the game? I ask you, is it as consistent as Cosmo?
At only 1 cost, you can bring Cosmo out on any turn of the game. When I’m trying to think of who to nullify, it’s usually a no brainer and most of the time I target a Main Character. That’s not to say I’ve never used his ability on supporting characters, I just don’t find it as beneficial considering your opponents life blood of the game is their main character. If I end up nullifying a supporting character, that character usually doesn’t live to see very many more turns which then makes my Cosmo pretty useless. Some main characters rely on their super powers more than others so it could make that decision pretty easy for you. There are definitely different strategies when and how you should use him. Depending on your characters, sometimes it might be better to wait to see if your opponent puts a Cosmo in play and then use your own to Nullify their Cosmo. Whatever strategy you use when playing Cosmo it will benefit you that turn, and if played right, many more turns after that.
With all that said, Cosmo is a beast. He’s single handedly helped me win many games and also has been the reason I’ve lost many games. I’ve even stopped my opponents Thanos from activating Infinity Gauntlet because they couldn’t get whatever card they needed to stop Cosmo in time. That’s a huge win in my book! The next deck you sit down to make just think to yourself, what if my opponent drops a Cosmo, what will I do then…
